Gibraltar

Since 1989, when The Royal Bank of Scotland (Gibraltar) Limited (RBS Gibraltar) was set up as a joint venture with Banco Santander, it has played a pivotal role in this developing financial centre.

A sister company of The Royal Bank of Scotland International Limited, RBS Gibraltar offers professional and corporate customers the complete range of general and specialist banking services, provided by dedicated treasury, lending and securities services experts. We are the first choice for a number of local authorised financial intermediaries and meet their requirements with a full range of financial services. We provide high calibre offshore banking and investment advice to expatriates through dedicated professionals qualified to UK standards.

Country profile

Despite Gibraltar's modest population size (30,000) its economic infrastructure is highly developed. Its geographic positioning and its distinct multi-ethnic cultures have facilitated a spirit of self-sufficiency. Linked to its stable governmental system and sterling linked financial independence, Gibraltar's economic environment is novel within the Mediterranean area and lends itself to diversification development, with all necessary support services for new business growth being in place.

Gibraltar's position within the EU is also privileged.

Finance centre profile

As the only British international financial centre within the EU, Gibraltar has a common law framework, a highly-educated workforce, and UK-trained professionals. It is renowned as one of the best-regulated finance centres in the world.

A Deposit Protection Scheme came into effect in 1999 and an Investor Compensation Scheme on 24th July 2003. As part of the European Union, Gibraltar implements all relevant EU directives, and the Financial Services Commission, established in 1989 as a statutory body totally independent from Government, goes further by matching UK standards in financial regulation and supervision.

Positioned as part of the EU, this allows Gibraltar access to various markets, in particular the single market in financial services.

Gibraltar has:

  • Tax benefits for qualifying residents and relocated executives with specialist skills
  • Valuable tax breaks for Exempt or Qualifying Companies
  • No Valued Added Tax (VAT)
  • No capital gains tax
  • No estate duty
  • No exchange controls
  • No inheritance tax
  • No wealth tax
  • Regulatory standards to UK and EU levels
